Just as in previous versions, Download Accelerator Plus 10 (free) boosts your download speeds by breaking files into smaller pieces, connecting to and downloading from multiple sources simultaneously, and even seeking out faster mirrors. What's different with this newest version, though, is the more streamlined engine that now offers features in the form of "add-ons." This means you can supplement your boosted download speeds (200 to 400 percent faster in many cases) with only the additional features that you want.

One of the most useful add-ons that you can enable in version 10 is DAPsters. If you download files from RapidShare.com or similar sites, this feature will come in handy. Basically, it minimizes the annoying pages that usually precede downloads on those popular file-transfer sites and fast-tracks you to the CAPTCHA step (if there is one).

Another great add-on is the Link Checker, which identifies valid and invalid download links before you actually hit the download button. It shows a small icon next to valid links on download pages, so you don't have to waste time trying out all of the different download sources.

Other add-ons include a Media Preview, Zip Preview, Internet Browser, and Video Downloader & Converter. I didn't see an FTP client, though, which was available in previous versions. Also available is a SPEEDbit Video Accelerator, which is offered as a bundled download during setup. Not only that, DAP 10 serves up quite a few annoying pop-up messages encouraging you to download and install it. I tried this feature and was less than impressed. I didn't notice much of a boost, and found the Video Acceleration status window intrusive.

Overall, I found DAP 10 to be extremely adept at performing its core function of accelerating downloads. I noticed the boosts consistently. It's also nice that version 10 lets you customize your experience by adding on only the features that you want. This add-on platform also bodes well for the future, as SPEEDbit is openly asking developers to create new offerings for their program.

Super Speed Internet & Browser Assistant by Slamet Yanuar is free software that promises to improve browsing speed, help parents block sites, and block malicious activity. Unfortunately, its redundant features, poorly designed interface, and overly technical terms take away from its usefulness.

The application presents a compact interface crammed with 12 tabs that include General Statistics, Distributed Proxy, and Cache. On the General Statistics tab, it shows information such as Cache Hit Ratio and Connection to the Tool. It also shows Money Saved and Cost, although it isn't clear how this is determined. Each line of information is in a different color, which makes the interface a bit of an eyesore.

Super Speed's primary claim is that it saves bandwidth by caching pages and helps block viruses at the source. Most browsers offer options to work offline and block certain sites, so these aren't really necessary or useful features. And, although the publisher claims it can help parents control the sites their kids visit, it's unlikely that most parents will understand or even want to know a lot of the information it presents.

Super Speed Internet & Browser Assistant may be free, but it offers little to users except a great deal of information that most folks will never need. We also found that it installed a desktop icon without asking, which isn't a big deal, but it left some folders behind when it was uninstalled that had to be manually removed.

NirSoft's PasswordFox is a free tool that extracts and displays the passwords stored in your Mozilla Firefox profile or any other user's profile. It displays each password's Record Index, Web Site, User Name, User Name Field, and other data. It also creates HTML-based reports that you can save or print. PasswordFox works in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

PasswordFox is portable freeware that runs without needing to be installed. When you first open the program, it automatically detects your main Firefox user profile and displays the data under headings that can be customized by clicking View and selecting the column choosing tool. If your profile is stored in a different location, or if you'd like to use a different profile, it's easy to do by clicking Select Folders and browsing to or specifying the file path. We could also check a box to specify a Firefox installation folder and enter a Master Password. Other options include the ability to add grid lines to the main view and add header lines to CSV/tab-delimited files. The latest version of PasswordFox removes UPX compression to keep from triggering false positives in Windows Defender and other antivirus applications. There's a Help file, but some users may need to open it directly from the program's folder.

PasswordFox is the sort of supersimple tool that earns its keep when you forget the password for logging on to your bank account or favorite social networking site. As more and more sites demand longer, more-secure passwords, it gets harder and harder to remember them. PasswordFox can help you with that.

Most people these days keep their contacts stored somewhere that they're frequently used, such as on a cell phone or in an e-mail client. If you prefer a standalone program for this task, My Agenda is a no-frills option that lets you record contact information and even dial numbers automatically

My Agenda's interface consists of a small rectangular box with a handful of buttons. Contact names are displayed in a scrollable list, organized alphabetically by first name; since there aren't separate fields for first and last name, you can easily change this by simply creating your contacts with their last names listed first. The program also has a search option that lets you search by name, address, or other fields. 

For each contact, you can record one address; a phone, fax, and mobile number; an e-mail address; a birth date; and notes. The program can display all of the birthdays occurring in a given month, which is a nice touch. Perhaps the most useful thing about My Agenda is its ability to automatically dial phone numbers; people who have never used such a feature, though, will have to seek instructions elsewhere, as My Agenda offers nothing in the way of information about how to configure it. This is the only potentially confusing aspect of My Agenda, so overall, the lack of documentation isn't a problem. My Agenda is a pretty bare-bones solution to managing contact information, but it's not a bad choice if that's your style.

Digital deejaying has skyrocketed in popularity over the past five years and it's no wonder why. Compared to a full vinyl setup with all the hardware and physical media it requires, an MP3-based mixing station is extremely simple and cheap. There's even free software to get you started, and one of the most popular programs available is Virtual DJ.

Virtual DJ is often packaged with USB-based hardware mixing consoles from the likes of Hercules and Numark, and, in fact, if you really want to delve into the full array of features, such devices are going to be a necessity--and they'll require a $99 license fee to upgrade to the Pro version of the software. That said, you can download the app for free by itself and make very basic mixes and playlists.

While the program isn't specifically geared at newbies, it is intuitive enough for a musically inclined individual to use right off the bat. Once installed, Virtual DJ automatically populates a folder tree in the bottom left corner where you can easily access your music collection. The bottom middle serves as a tabbed, multifunction area where you can browse tracks, sample music bites, add effects, and make recordings.

The top of the window is dominated by two digital turntables, which are distinguished by color: blue on the left and red on the right. Each one has the ability to cue, loop, adjust pitch, scratch, and shift (among other features). In the middle is the mixing console, where you can adjust the gain and master volume, as well as transition between the two tracks. Once the songs have been dragged and dropped into the console, a bar along the top displays the sound waves of each to help with visual mixing. There's also a video input option that lets you create montages to the music.

The stylish interface and high number of features score points, but learning how to use the program is a hit-or-miss proposition. To be perfectly honest, using it without mixing hardware (that is, just a mouse and keyboard) is a challenge, and not one we enjoyed, so we recommend hooking up a compatible USB controller. Virtual DJ is free, fully featured, and well-laid-out. It's a useful option both for aspiring mixers and newbies.

KMPlayer to convert 2D videos to 3D videos

Last month, a new version of KMPlayer was released and boy, did they change it! The new release is totally unlike any of it’s previous incarnations. Even though the version number is a minor bump from 3.1 to 3.2, it constitutes a major release as it includes several new features such as video and music library, 3D video playback, integration with online streaming services, a spanking new look and soon to be introduced app store.

First, let us see how the new KMPlayer looks like.

What you see above is not a simple video player but almost a media center. The column at the middle gives you access to various video streaming services such as K-POP, Viki, EveryonTV and 3D Movie Plus. You may not have heard of these names but they are popular among Korean Internet users. KMPlayer is developed and maintained by the Korean streaming video company PandoraTV which acquired the video player in 2008. So the preference for EveryonTV over YouTube or Hulu is natural.

On the right-column is the video and music library. You add the directories where your music and video is located and KMPlayer will automatically add them to the library. The lack of a search tool however makes it difficult find whatever you are looking for, especially if you have a large collection.

The most exciting new feature is 3D video playback.

Playing 3D videos require a special video player because 3D videos contain two video streams. If you download a 3D video from YouTube and try to play it in a normal video player, you will see two videos playing side by side, such as the one below.

But in KMPlayer you will see it in anaglyph 3D.

The 3D mode is controlled by the 3D button you see in the toolbar. Originally, the video will load like in a normal player – two videos side by side. But once you click the 3D button, the video will magically convert into 3D. You can change the 3D mode from 2-color anaglyph to interlaced 3D, if you have 3D monitors and polarized 3D glasses such as those available with LG Cinema 3D TVs or even ones used in movie theatres. Interlaced 3D videos retain image quality and color reproduction which suffer in anaglyphic mode.

You can even change the anaglyph color depending on the color of your glasses, from Red/Cyan to Red/Blue or Red/Green etc. Depending on the source video you can also change the 3D from left/right to up/down.

KMPlayer v3.2 also supports Intel’s Wireless Display technology that can wirelessly connect a WiDi enabled computer or laptop to an HDTV or monitor through an adapter box that plugs into the HDMI port of any display. I’m not sure where KMPlayer fits into the equation, but support for Intel’s WiDi is reportedly a feature.

At it’s core KMPlayer is still an awesome video player. Plenty of support for video and audio file formats and subtitles. It provides both internal and external filters with connections to splitters, decoders, audio/video transform filters. The player can set many audio and video effects, slow down or increase playback speed, select parts of a video as favorites, do various A-B repeats, remap the keys of remote interface for HTPC including overlay screen controls, and change a skin dynamically depending on a media type playing. KMP is completely customizable thanks to a wide selection of skins and color schemes, as well extensive the configuration options
